🚩 Local Area Attractions / Amenities: L.L. Bean sponsors the fare free Island Explorer, which is a series of buses and routes that transport visitors throughout Mt. Desert Island and Acadia. We used the buses several times, and they were very reliable. The Island Explorer is also a great alternative to driving large vehicles around the small villages or locations where parking is limited. Bar Harbor is the star village that most people visit when going to Acadia National Park, but make sure to explore the other areas as well. After arriving, we found out that you couldn’t ride Class 2 or 3 e-bikes on Acadia carriage trails, so we found Island Bike Rental in Northeast Harbor which offered tagalong rentals which worked well for the girls. Island Bike Rental was very competitively priced and offered pick-up/drop-off service to the trailhead.
In addition to Mt. Desert Island, make sure to venture out into Ellsworth. The town has several shops, restaurants and entertainment options. We went to lunch one afternoon and found out there was a performance of The Little Mermaid at The Grand. The girls love watching live shows and performances, so we went one evening and it was a great local performance. In addition, don’t miss Timber Tina’s Great Maine Lumberjack Show. It’s so much fun and an in expensive option for the family to be entertained. Tina’s a pro that orchestrates a lively demonstration and explains the history of lumberjacking in a fun and informative way for all.
We spent two weeks in the Mt. Desert area and could have easily stayed another one. So much to do and see from the vast beauty of Acadia, to the many quaint villages, and the numerous lighthouses around the island. Maine has so much to offer!
✏️ General Feedback / Review: The campground was well maintained and big rig friendly. This location does not have a lot of extra amenities like a park for the kids, but its proximity to Acadia and Bar Harbor as well as site size more than made up for it. There are a few seasonal residents, but for the most part the campground seemed to be used by individuals visiting the area. The staff is very friendly and helpful, and the camp store was well stocked.
